Becoming Flexible Steel

This past weekend, I embarked on another certification. For those keeping track, that would be my 5th fitness related designation in 11 months. Is it any wonder that I’m exhausted!

Thankfully, this one didn’t require months of preparation and was only 1 day of work. That’s not to say that it was an easy day by any means. It was challenging but good.

For those that don’t know what it means to be Flexible Steel, it’s basically combining strength and flexibility together. Where some are flexible and weak and others are strong and can’t touch their toes, flexible steel aims to marry the 2 so you can be a well rounded strong and mobile individual.

We started the day taking some baseline photos so that we would have something to compare to later in the day after going through a series of mobility and power stretching drills.

Without going into specifics about the different drills we went through and coached each other through (can’t spoil all the fun you’ll have when you take the course for yourself!), I will say that there was a lot of awesome results and even more pain as we went through the day. It was pretty cool to see how little tweaks and drills could produce instant results. The human body is seriously awesome.

Here are some of my comparisons from the day:

Hard to see but palms aren't fully touching the ground in the shot on the left and are with slight bend at the elbows on the right.

Probably the best my squat has ever looked!

Even the day after, my shoulders felt so amazing!

Huge difference here (over the span of a minute or two) using only verbal cues to create space and spread.

Walking away from this course with a shiny new certificate and a lot of information has me thinking that I just might be able to get myself into the splits doing all this. It won’t be without a lot of work (and pain…believe me…some of the more intense drills are not for the faint of heart) but I would pretty much consider myself an A-list rock star if I could achieve this.

As you can clearly see...I have my work cut out for me...
