Embracing Winter

Other than a bit of a blog snafu involving the site going down for a day, this past weekend was nothing short of awesome! Warm weather (relatively speaking…there’s still a butt-load of snow on the ground) just screamed for some time spent outdoors.

We’re still in a phase of not always being able to go do things as a family of five because my baby girl still needs 2 naps a day and isn’t walking so taking her out in the snow isn’t exactly fun for her. The fact that she refuses to keep a hat, mitts or boots of any kind on only adds to the frustration.

So while I stayed home with her, my husband took the boys sledding. As they get older and more adventurous, I have to say that I just love watching them (or in this case, watching videos of them on hubby’s phone) explore new grounds and embrace trying things that might intimidate them (sound like someone you know??). A year or two ago, this would have been impossible because they would have been too scared to try. I love watching them slowly emerging from behind that wall of intimidation and really embrace the funness of life.

Sunday, I needed some fun so I hit up the snowshoe trails again and had a blast! The snow was a bit harder this time so there was much less sinking but it was still a good challenge. I love that we can head out and make our own trails and explore parts of the park we haven’t been to before because it’s off the marked trails. There’s something rebellious in doing that (or maybe I just live a shamefully safe life). Either way, I had fun and was more than ready for an early bedtime that night.

I have to give myself a pat on the back because I really dislike winter. Even though I feel claustrophobic after a few months indoors, venturing outside to do stuff has never been something I’ve been overly fond of doing. So imagine how surprised I’ve been that being forced into the cold daily to walk my boy to the school bus and these fun little weekend activities have been a fantastic release for me.

Overall, I’d say that in spite of some typical winter blues that always seem to hit me (and a lot of other people from the sounds of it), this winter has so far been pretty darn enjoyable. Let’s hope that we can keep the momentum of it going right through until Spring!
