Disclaimer: New Balance provided my boys each with a pair of shoes in exchange for posting a review. All opinions are my own.
If there is one thing my kids like to do, it’s run. I think that goes without saying that most kids like to run. It’s hard to imagine that I was once that kid who couldn’t sit still, who had boundless energy and no inhibitions to keep me from doing whatever was necessary to release said boundless energy.
It’s kind of funny how our mindset changes as we get older to where we suddenly have to motivate ourselves, bribe ourselves, force ourselves to do stuff that as kids, we just did with pure joy and happy hearts.
I was recently contacted by New Balance and asked if I would like to try their new 990v4’s for my boys (sorry little lady, no swanky shoes for your pudgy little toes just yet). Knowing how much the boys love to run around and knowing that their feet are outgrowing their shoes much faster than I can afford to replace them, I was all in.
I was actually happy that New Balance wanted to outfit the boys because I personally love their shoes. I wear their minimus trainers for my every day walking and running around and I absolutely adore their trail shoes (both are older models that I’ve had for a couple of years but they have both seen me through many miles and many trails and a few obstacle races and still have a lot of miles left on them).
Now, I should add disclaimers that my boys still get excited over new clothes. I’m pretty sure this won’t last forever but we’re rolling with it because it’s kinda nice to throw something new at them and see excitement. I should also mention that they still like it when they have matchy things so even before we talk about the shoe itself, we’re already winning.
The 990’s are a pint-size version of the adult heritage version of the shoe. They also feature the abzorb technology which is a superior blend of foam cushioning and compression set featuring rubber. Fancy talk for: the shoe is comfortable.
So, I asked the boys what they thought of the shoes and responses included “cool”, “good”, “fast” and “I don’t know how to tie my laces”. I’m not entirely sure where those responses fall on a scale of 1-10 but given that they ask to wear them all the time (and the little lady has tried to make a run for it in them as well), I’m going to venture to say that they pass the kid test.
As a mom, to spend any amount of money on my kids, I need the assurance that the product is going to last longer than the feet growing out of them and be able to take a beating because most kids, my own included, are rough on anything that comes into contact with them. Far too often, we’ve spent money on things that haven’t lasted. I have no doubt that these shoes will last and serve the boys well. They don’t complain about sore feet, the laces stay tied (kind of a big deal for the person who hates retying shoes every 10 seconds) and they just plain look cool (given that I’m lacking in the cool department, extra points to New Balance for giving my kids a shot at being fashionable).
I’m happy with them, the boys are happy in them and I suspect we will log many miles of running, jumping, biking and general mischief wearing them.
Thanks New Balance!!
